I’m starting a fun new way of sharing in-season foods! Welcome to Seasonal Spotlight, where I plan to share an ingredient each month and how I enjoy eating it. Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to try new things or find a new way to enjoy something you love. I’m kicking things off with September’s beauty: figs!
Ah, I can’t believe fall is already here. In the garden, the tomato plants are looking their worst, but still working hard to turn red (or orange or yellow or purple) before the air becomes colder. The nights are cooler and the days aren’t as extreme, and for that I am grateful. Some of the leaves are turning colors before our eyes and we’re all waiting for the moment we can pull out the flannels and boots. I think of figs as the first sign that fall is in the air.
I’m discovering that people either love or hate figs, very few people seem to just tolerate them. Personally, I love them, but I can see how easy it would be to not like them, especially if you’re sensitive to texture.
I love adding figs to a charcuterie board or a salad, but here are three of my favorite ways to eat them this season.
Toast with Figs
Start with bread, any bread. I love Ezekiel bread as an everyday type of toast, a fresh loaf of sourdough or French bread, but use what you love. Toast it of course.
Smear some cheese – cream cheese, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese.
Slice some figs – I cut mine in half or quarters.
Drizzle with honey (hot honey is super delish too!)
Sprinkle some chopped nuts – walnuts, pecans, pistachios.
Enjoy!
Oatmeal with Figs
Cook up some oats – I use quick cook, but you can make old fashioned or steel cut. I like to add some chia seeds and cinnamon to mine, but follow the directions for water/milk and oat measurements.
Once cooked, add a dollop of ricotta cheese and stir that in.
Top with sliced figs and walnuts (and maybe a drizzle of maple syrup).
Enjoy!
Super Simple Snack with Figs
Slice figs in half
Add a piece of yummy cheese – brie, Cambozola, white cheddar, or goat cheese.
Wrap with a slice of prosciutto.
Enjoy!

These jammy fig bars look incredible!
If I was willing to make my own ravioli, these Butternut Squash Raviolis topped with figs would be at the top of my list. Can someone make this for me, please?

I think I’ll recreate this Fig and Goat Cheese Flatbread soon! YUM!

I’m so excited for this spotlight series! I’m a weird one lol – I like figs sometimes but I don’t love them. That’s a great point you make about the texture. All of these ideas sound delicious though! I’ll be looking for figs next time I’m at the store – I miss seeing them at the farmer’s market.

Let me know if you try them this year! 🙂
